Frequently Asked Art + Design Questions

Please reach us at Anthony@BAnthonyNelson.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I accept select commissions for original paintings, portraiture, illustration, graphic design, logos, posters, T-shirt designs, multimedia and mixed-media artwork, murals, and other custom creative projects.

My work is primarily centered around people. I’m an impressionistic portrait artist and storyteller, so people, personalities, characters, and the stories surrounding them tend to be at the heart of what I create. I’m always interested in an unusual idea, but projects outside my normal wheelhouse are considered individually.

Original commissioned paintings start at $1,000.

For a better frame of reference, my existing and commissioned 24 × 36 acrylic paintings generally range from $2,500–$15,000, with approximately $5,000 being typical.

Those numbers are reference points rather than a price chart. A relatively straightforward portrait and a highly detailed, multi-person narrative painting of the same dimensions can require very different amounts of work.

Standard canvas and frame dimensions are preferred whenever possible. They make materials, framing, presentation, and eventual replacement or restoration considerably easier.

Custom or nonstandard dimensions generally add $250–$500 per artwork.

Clients may provide their own canvas, paper, frame, or other materials, but anything I'm expected to work with must be approved by me in advance. Projects involving client-provided materials are custom quoted.

Unless specifically stated in your project agreement, commission pricing covers the artwork itself.

Framing, shadowboxes, specialty mounting, display hardware, fabrication, and other presentation requirements are additional. I can coordinate or refer clients to appropriate outside services when needed.

Yes. Additional people generally start at a minimum of $250 per additional subject, but the actual cost depends on the complexity and number of people being incorporated into the composition.

A five-person band portrait isn't simply a one-person portrait multiplied by five. Composition, interaction, scale, detail, and the way those people need to work together visually all factor into the quote.

Pets can also be incorporated and are treated as additional subjects for pricing purposes. I generally prefer not to accept animal-only painting commissions.

I work in acrylic, watercolor, graphite/pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink, illustration, mixed media, multimedia, and combinations of traditional and unconventional materials.

I generally defer from traditional oil-painting commissions because of the extended production and drying time involved. If you're looking for the visual richness, depth, and texture associated with oils, however, I can create heavily textured acrylic work with an oil-like appearance.

Simple, single-color logo and poster designs start at $500, including poster designs up to 18 × 24 inches.

More complex designs, additional colors, custom illustration, extensive typography, multiple subjects, specialized production requirements, or other creative considerations increase the project price.

There is also an important difference between designing a relatively simple logo and creating an original illustration that will ultimately be used as a logo. Illustration-intensive projects are priced according to the artwork involved.

Very simple, single-color T-shirt designs start at $250.

Pricing increases with additional colors, original illustration, complexity, number of subjects, specialized production requirements, and intended usage.

I can also help coordinate or provide referrals for printing and other production services.

Very simple, single-color illustrations at 8.5 × 11 inches or smaller start at $250.

Larger dimensions, additional colors, greater detail, multiple subjects, more complicated compositions, or more extensive illustration requirements increase the price.

For graphic design, illustration, T-shirt design, and similar design-based projects, the standard scope generally includes:

  • Three Initial Design Options
  • Two Rounds of Revisions
  • One Final Fine-Tuning Round

Additional revisions or changes beyond the agreed scope may require an additional fee.

Physical original artwork works differently. Once an approved mockup establishes the composition and direction of a painting or other physical artwork, the final piece is created according to that approved direction and my artistic interpretation.

Standard deliverables typically include JPEG, AI, PSD, and PDF files as appropriate to the project.

PNG, SVG, and EPS files are also available when required.

The specific deliverables will be established as part of the project scope.

Yes. Depending on the project, I can either coordinate additional production services or refer you to an appropriate provider.

I prefer to work with local printers and have a good history with Createur.com provides for top quality.

Printing, fabrication, framing, merchandise production, specialty services, shipping, and other outside costs are separate from the creative fee unless specifically included in your project agreement.

Every commissioned artwork will be represented with a mockup of the expected finished work so that you understand the basic composition and creative direction before final production.

That mockup is normally created after your deposit and is included as part of the commission process.

If you'd like me to develop a mockup before you've committed to the commission, pre-commission concept and mockup development starts at $250+, depending on what's required.

Murals, multimedia and mixed-media projects are always custom quoted.

These projects can involve painting, drawing, photography, dimensional construction, fabrication, found objects, personal memorabilia, unusual materials, custom presentation, and any number of other processes. There isn't a useful one-size-fits-all price.

I have created murals and will consider indoor and outdoor mural projects individually.

Scale, location, surface conditions, accessibility, complexity, environment, equipment, and materials all factor into the project quote.

Anticipated mural materials are paid upfront. If changes or additional requests during production require additional materials, those costs are added accordingly.

Client-provided photographs, letters, clothing, keepsakes, memorabilia, and other personal objects can potentially be incorporated into the work when appropriate and approved in advance.

The standard deposit is 50% of the agreed project price upfront, with the remaining 50% due upon completion according to the agreed timeline.

Once work has begun or project-specific materials have been purchased, the deposit is non-refundable.

Payment plans may be available on a case-by-case basis. The initial 50% deposit still applies, with subsequent payments typically scheduled monthly on a specific date agreed upon with the client.

The remaining balance is due upon completion of the project.

Payment must be received before you receive the finished artwork or final digital files, or by the agreed completion date—whichever comes first.

Sometimes.

Rush projects are considered according to my current workload, the requested deadline, and the amount of disruption required to accommodate the project. Any rush premium is quoted individually.

Any requested change to the agreed project scope pauses production.

Before work resumes, we'll determine how the change affects the artwork, price, materials, and completion schedule and agree to the revised terms in writing.

This includes changes such as adding subjects, substantially changing the composition, changing dimensions or materials, or otherwise altering the approved direction.

Absolutely. You can provide reference photography, or photography can be created specifically for the project when appropriate.

Reference material must either be wholly owned or controlled by the client without additional third-party permissions being required, or the client must provide proof of the necessary licensing or permissions upfront.

I won't knowingly create commissioned work from copyrighted third-party imagery that neither of us has permission to use.

Purchasing a commissioned physical artwork gives you ownership of the physical original. It does not automatically transfer the copyright, reproduction rights, or commercial rights to the image.

Unless otherwise negotiated in writing, I retain the copyright and reproduction rights to my artwork.

Commercial use needs to be established as part of the project.

Album artwork, merchandise, apparel for resale, advertising, publishing, branding, promotional campaigns, reproductions, prints, and other commercial applications may require specific licensing and will affect the project quote according to the intended use.

A complete copyright transfer or buyout can be negotiated when appropriate, but it is not automatically included in the purchase price of commissioned artwork. Any transfer of copyright requires a separate written agreement and additional pricing.

Unless we agree otherwise in writing beforehand, yes.

I retain the right to photograph and document my work and to display commissioned artwork on my website, social media, portfolio, exhibitions, promotional materials, and other representations of my work.

If confidentiality is important to your project, tell me before we begin so that it can be incorporated into our agreement.

Yes.

Shipping, specialty packaging, and insurance are quoted separately according to the artwork and destination.

Local pickup is also available.

Tell me what you're thinking.

Send me the idea, intended size, number of people involved, preferred medium, reference material if you have it, how the finished work will be used, and when you'd ideally like to have it completed.

From there, we can figure out what's possible, what it should cost, and whether we're a good fit for one another.

Custom artwork starts with an idea. The quote starts with a conversation.

ARTIST IS SELLING PRINTS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

B ANTHONY NELSON HAS NEVER SOLD PRINTS OF HIS WORK - UNTIL NOW!

You can thank friend and fellow artist Jeremy Miller for this one. Asked for years to make prints of his work, Anthony has refused, wishing for each piece to remain "one-of-a-kind."  After some sound reasoning, a lot of coaxing and some minor investment, Anthony acquiesced to Jeremy and has allowed 100 signed & numbered giclee printed recreations, in its original size of 24X36 on gallery canvas - of one of his most popular paintings, Inspiration Is Everywhere. Continuing his commitment to one-of-a-kind work, each print will also have a hand-painted alteration to the watch in the image specific only to that print and its owner. Ask the artist how to get your rare fine art authenticated print today.
