Dangerous Rhythms Featuring T.J. English & Jay Cates
DANGEROUS RHYTHMS, featuring TJ ENGLISH & JAY CATES, is the launch of a new book club and concert series. The Black Market Book Club invites authors to join Seattle musicians and book lovers as we work together to move the music off the page and onto the stage.
TJ English wrote what we consider the most thrilling and detailed book about the surprising and shocking connections between America's greatest art form and the Underworld. Icons such as Sinatra, Satchmo, Louis Prima, and Billie Holiday made it out of obscurity and into the limelight of hit records and classic Hollywood films the hard way and it's time to tell these stories that ultimately teach us to overcome and persevere over any obstacle.
A list of notable jazz and soul musicians are participating with drummer Davy Nefos taking on the role of music director.
Beloved local book store owner and TJ English fan JB Johnson will be helping sponsor the night as well as moderating a lively discussion with the author.
Local songwriter and author Davin Michael Stedman dreamed up the club and concept after a rather incredible visit to JB's book store, BLMF at Pike Place Market.

With his debut album ‘At Long Last Love’ and a growing local following, the Seattle-based singer-songwriter is emerging from a lineage of greats with a voice—and songwriting perspective—built to last.
In a city with deep jazz roots and no shortage of talent, it takes something rare to stand out. Jay Cates, a Seattle-based new jazz singer-songwriter, is doing just that—without much noise, but with undeniable momentum.
Seattle has long produced artists who reshape the language of American music—from Ray Charles and Quincy Jones to figures like Ernestine Anderson and Kenny G. Cates emerges from that lineage not by imitation, but by continuation—drawing from tradition while carving out something distinctly his own.
Since the December release of his debut album At Long Last Love, Cates has been building a steady and loyal following across the city’s listening rooms. The record leans into the architecture of the American songbook while opening space for original compositions that feel both lived-in and newly uncovered. It’s not revivalism—it’s continuation.
On stage, Cates performs with The One-Night Stand New Jazz Band, a rotating collective of Grammy Award™-winning musicians whose resumes could easily eclipse the room if they let them. They don’t. Instead, the focus stays on the music—tight, intentional, and quietly electric.
Cates’ presence matches that tone—moving between pace, story, and vocal prowess that bestows a kind of confidence that doesn’t need to announce itself. His performances also carry a natural, easy humor that keeps audiences engaged without ever distracting from the music.
The Seattle jazz community has taken notice. Cates was recently nominated for Vocalist of the Year by Earshot Jazz, a nod that feels less like a breakthrough moment and more like a formal acknowledgment of what’s already happening.
At the core of his work is songwriting. Cates cites Cole Porter as his greatest influence—a throughline that helps explain both the sophistication of his phrasing and the title of his debut album, At Long Last Love. Like Porter, Cates writes with an ear for melody and a precision for language that rewards close listening.
What’s happening is this: rooms are filling, and the audiences are listening - to a voice with something to say - and the generational talent to say it in a way that lasts.
